The Ramayana Trail

The famous Ramayana Trail takes you through Sri Lanka’s holy landscapes, where history, mythology, and spirituality come together. This spiritually enlightening trip takes you to important places connected to the Ramayana legend. It includes trips to temples, beautiful mountains, and the seaside. The tour is for pilgrims, cultural explorers, and heritage travellers. It combines narrative, devotion, and exploration in different parts of the island.

Day 01: Arrive in Colombo, have a city orientation walk, and spend the night in Colombo.

When you get to Bandaranaike International Airport, meet your guide and take a ride to Colombo. Start your trip with a guided tour around colonial-era sites, temples, and other important places in the city that show you Sri Lanka’s spiritual and historical foundations. Have a laid-back evening getting to know the city’s lively culture before spending the night in Colombo.

Day 02: Drive to Chilaw, see the Munneswaram Temple, and spend the night in Chilaw.

Travel north to Chilaw, where the holy Munneswaram Temple is located. It is strongly linked to Lord Rama’s journey there while he was looking for Sita. Learn about the temple’s role in the Ramayana while exploring the temple complex and other cultural attractions. You have the evening to think quietly before spending the night in Chilaw.

Day 03: Go to Kandy, the Chariot Path, and Dunuwila Lake. See a cultural performance and spend the night in Kandy.

Travel inland to Kandy, pausing at Pussellawa to see the Chariot Path, which is said to have been utilised by Ravana’s troops. Go to Dunuwila Lake, which is connected to the famous arrow that killed Ravana. In the evening, see a traditional cultural dance show before going to bed in Kandy.

Day 04: Drive to Nuwara Eliya, see the Sita Amman Temple, and spend the night there.

Go on to the foggy hill town of Nuwara Eliya, where you will pass through beautiful tea plantations and waterfalls. Go visit the famous Sita Amman Temple, which is thought to be where Sita was held captive. Before checking into your accommodation in the cool hill area, take a relaxing walk around the temple grounds.

Day 05: Ashok Vatika (Hakgala Gardens) / Optional Wellness or Tea Plantation Visit / Stay overnight in Nuwara Eliya

Visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, also known as Ashok Vatika, the pleasure garden where Sita lived while she was being held captive. Take a walk through beautiful gardens with unusual plants and peaceful paths. You can choose to do a health activity or go on a guided tour of a tea plantation in the afternoon before spending the night in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 06: Visit the Divurumpola Temple in Welimada, have a cultural experience, and stay the night in Nuwara Eliya.

Go to Divurumpola Temple, which is thought to be where Sita’s Agni Pariksha took place. Find out how important it is spiritually and see local ceremonies. Before going back to Nuwara Eliya for the night, keep having a cultural experience in the area around it.

Day 07: Go to Ramboda and see the falls and the hills. Stay the night in Ramboda.

Leave for Ramboda, stopping at the beautiful Ramboda Falls, which is one of the highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Enjoy beautiful views and optional short hikes around the hills. The quiet mountains are a great place to spend the night.

Day 08: Drive to Kataragama, see the temples, and do evening rituals. Spend the night in Kataragama.

Go south to Kataragama, which is one of Sri Lanka’s most important pilgrimage sites for people of all faiths. Visit the holy temple complex that is linked to the old Ramayana customs. In the evening, see colourful festivities and customs before staying overnight at Kataragama.

Day 09: Go to Trincomalee, see the Koneswaram Temple, and stay the night in Trincomalee.

Take a trip to the eastern coast and see the old Koneswaram Temple, which is impressively positioned atop Swami Rock and looks out over the Indian Ocean. Find out how deeply it is linked to the stories of the Ramayana and the worship of Shiva. Spend the rest of the day seeing famous places along the coast, then spend the night in Trincomalee.

Day 10: Exploring Adam's Bridge, viewing the sights along the coast, and spending the night in Trincomalee

Go to Adam’s Bridge (Rama Setu), which is thought to be the famous bridge built by Lord Rama’s troops. You may take pictures and observe the scenery along the coast, and if the sea is calm, you can even take a boat trip. Go back to Trincomalee for a calm night.

Day 11: Go to Weragantota, explore Lankapura, and spend the night in Weragantota.

Go to Weragantota, which is thought to be one of Ravana’s old capitals and is linked to stories of early flying. Visit historical locations that are connected to Ravana’s realm and ancient civilisations. Spend the night at Weragantota, which is in a very old area.

Day 12: Visit the Kelaniya Temple, then go back to Colombo and spend the night there.

Go to the Kelaniya Temple, which is where Vibhishana was anointed king after Ravana was defeated. After the visit, go back to Colombo for your last night. Have a peaceful evening thinking about your spiritual tour across Sri Lanka.
